Remember that kid who played a ton of instruments—and, oh you know, occasionally conducted the full orchestra—as well as smashing out some epic guitar solos? Yes, that’s right, I’m obviously talking about JJ.

Well, he’s exactly where you’d expect him to be…

When did you play with the BYO?

After graduating primary school in 2017, my family moved to Bonville where I would start my high school journey at Bellingen in 2018. I quickly became involved with the Youth Orchestra the same year and soon after in 2020 I started playing with the senior string ensemble Sinfonia led by Amber Davis. I would find myself playing with the Bellingen Youth Orchestra up until 2024.

What instruments do you play?

The guitar was my first instrument which I started when I was 7-8 years old. Starting high school, I picked up the Cello and Trumpet which I had an amazing time playing both in orchestra. I’ve also had the privilege of conducting the orchestra under Annie’s guidance which is currently a career prospect for me. Since starting university, I have picked up the Trombone, bass guitar and various other instruments like piano that I have a fun time jamming with.

Where could we find you now?

As of writing this, I am studying at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University (QCGU) located next to the lovely parklands of South Bank. I am completing my bachelor’s in music, majoring in composition under the guidance of Australian contemporary composer Gerard Brophy.

What was your favourite memorable moment with the orchestra?

Although there has been a plethora of incredible moments with the Bellingen Youth Orchestra such as being filmed for Scott Hicks’ film ‘The Musical Mind’ and the camps where professionals from Australia’s most distinguished ensembles came to mentor us. My all-time favourite and most memorable moment with the orchestra would have to be the 2018 performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture at the Bellingen Show Ground. An unforgettable night and experience.

What is on your playlist this week?

Honestly, it changes day by day. One second, I will be listening to a Mahler Symphony, and the next second Miles Davis “Four and More” album will be playing. I try my best to listen to all kinds of music as I believe the more you venture out into the numerous genres of music, you will find yourself artistically more knowledgeable and grow a deep appreciation for art forms you have never heard of.

What was the best thing you took away from the BYO?

Consistency and experience. My time with the BYO has taught me consistency can take you very far just by showing up to rehearsal. It is ultimately something that I apply to my everyday life. The experiences the BYO offers is just thrilling to be a part of, most of them leaving memories that will last a lifetime.

We have lots of new players every year … do you have any advice for our young players?

My advice would be to have fun. Music is meant to be enjoyed, so why not make the most of it. Not everyone can say that they that they play in an orchestra with 70 – 80 people. Also, making music with others has got to be one of the best things you could experience.

What essential creative experience should we be adding to our ‘to do’ list this year?

A creative experience the BYO could try would be playing music alongside a short film live or play music with actors and/or dancers on stage. There are various creative experiences the BYO could explore with the collaboration of other artists. Some of the best concerts have come from collaborations, but I stand by the short film idea or even a small section from a movie could be amazing.

If you could travel to one place in 2026 … where would it be?

There are so many places I want to go explore as everywhere has a unique culture and musically unique in their own ways. Although a bit cliché, I would want to travel to Japan as I have recently taken a huge interest in their music, specifically jazz fusion from groups such as T-Square, Naniwa Express and Casiopea. After having many of my friends’ tour with the Queensland Youth Orchestra Big Band to Japan and hearing their musical experiences, it has greatly inspired me.

Thanks JJ.
