Jessie joined the Bellingen Youth Orchestra after moving from Perth in 2016, quickly finding her place as a talented violinist and singer. Now studying Musical Theatre at WAAPA, she continues to build on the passion and friendships first sparked through her BYO journey. We were super happy to hear from Jessie!

When did you play?

My family and I moved to NSW from Perth in 2016, and upon arrival, my older brother Liam and I were quickly introduced to the BYO and the string ensemble. Later, in Years 10–11, I joined the String Sinfonia, run by the incredible Amber Davies, and started a string quartet with my best friend, Erin. Sadly, in 2020, I had to move again, cutting my journey in Bellingen short.

What did you play?

I played the violin, having taken lessons for a few years before arriving. I then had lessons with the lovely Jackie Gill and later continued with Amber Davies. Around Year 8, my love of singing began to grow, and I even had the amazing opportunity to sing “On My Own” from Les Misérables with the orchestra.

Where could we find you now?

I am now fully following my love of music through musical theatre! I completed a Diploma of Musical Theatre in Melbourne and am now about to start my final year of the Bachelor of Musical Theatre at WAAPA in Western Australia. We are currently about to open a brand-new Australian musical, written by Tony-nominated writer Eddie Perfect (best known for Beetlejuice the Musical!), called Tivoli Lovely. I also teach singing lessons at Stagecoach Perth on my day off. I plan to move back to Melbourne in 2027 and work on establishing myself as a musical theatre artist.

Favourite memorable moment

My most memorable moment was in 2018 when our orchestra had the high honour of performing Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin alongside world-renowned pianist David Helfgott — one of the kindest, most generous, true talents alive. It was an honour to accompany him and listen to him play. Truly a moment to remember the beauty and importance of music.

What’s on your playlist?

There are so many incredible musicals today that require artists to sing, act, and play an instrument while performing! This is a big goal of mine as a performer, and these are some of the musicals I recommend: Amélie, Once, Lord of the Rings, Company, and The Band’s Visit, to name a few!

What’s the best thing you took away from the BYO?

The BYO taught me the importance of hard work and discipline. Being in an environment with so many young people who shared a passion for music and a drive for excellence taught me a level of professionalism that has helped me immensely in the industry I am now pursuing. That is all thanks to the incredible teachers, but especially Annie Phelan. She knows how to treat students with kindness while still constantly pushing them to strive higher. The greatest thing I took away, however, is my best friend Erin Neville — she is the most incredible person I know and has been my rock ever since.

Advice for young players

Since the BYO is such an incredible opportunity for young players, I’d say my biggest advice would be to set goals for yourself. You learn so many high-level pieces of music — it’s important to pace yourself. When you practise or rehearse, set goals like: I’m going to focus on dynamics or correct bowing this time. It’s a great way to handle the workload while still giving yourself achievable milestones. Even goals like I’m going to work towards moving up a desk this year! are great ways to keep yourself accountable. Beyond that — enjoy yourself and say yes to every opportunity. You won’t regret it!

Essential creative activity for the to-do list

Musicals!! Can’t recommend them enough. Currently in Sydney you can catch Back to the Future, The Book of Mormon, and Cats! That, and whatever musical Bellingen High School has cooking up next…

If you could travel to one place in 2026, where would it be?

I have actually been blessed to receive an award through WAAPA called the Taryn Fiebig Award. It’s a singing grant that awards the recipient $10,000 towards a trip to further their skills. So from December to January, I’ll be trekking to London and soaking up the incredible performances and opportunities the West End has to offer! This has always been a dream of mine, so it feels surreal to be gifted this amazing opportunity.
